A committeeman no more

The City Charter says that an alderman can not also serve as a committee-man or -woman. The same goes for the mayor and the comptroller. Interestingly, the same rule do not apply for state senators, state representatives, or the so-called “county offices” like sheriff, treasurer, recorder of deeds, or license collector. Those offices are created by state law and therefore are not affected by the City of St. Louis’ charter.

And so as I prepare to take the oath of office today to officially become the new alderman of the 21st Ward, I have submitted my letter of resignation to the chairman of the City Democratic Committee.

Brian Wahby
Chairman
St. Louis City Democratic Central Committee

Dear Mr. Chairman:

As I prepare to be sworn in today as the new alderman of the 21st Ward, in compliance with the Article VIII, §8 of the City Charter and the rules of the Board of Aldermen, please accept this letter as notification that I am resigning from my position as a Democratic Committeeman.

I look forward to continuing to work with the members of the Central Committee in our shared goal of building a stronger St. Louis and electing the best candidates to move Missouri forward.

In the days and weeks to come, I will be working with my excellent committeewoman, Ms. Anna Tyler, on my replacement on the Committee, someone who will help continue moving the 21st Ward forward. I would greatly appreciate the Committee’s support for our candidate.

Thank you to all the members of the Committee. If I can ever be of any assistance in my new role, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Alderman Antonio D. French
21st Ward, City of St. Louis
