French: We Should Cut Waste before City Services

With an estimated $45 million deficit looming in the 2010-2011 budget (which starts July 1), members of the Ways & Means Committee of the Board of Aldermen are being asked to make some decisions. Alderman Antonio French believes it is wrong to balance the city’s budget on the backs of the city’s most vulnerable citizens and will continue to fight cuts to city services before each and every city department is thoroughly examined for waste, inefficiency, and misappropriations.

    This is inane. Cutting public services for our poor? We need to reinstate taxes that Slay cut for corporations. For example, why don’t we remove the exemption of stock options from the city earnings tax?
